Odoo or ERPNext: which one fits your organisation (2026)
Odoo vs ERPNext is rarely a choice between good and bad. Both have an open-source base. The differences are in licensing, hosting, how customisation survives upgrades, and who can support you locally. This article sets those points side by side and ends with the questions you answer in a paid discovery.
What is the difference between Odoo and ERPNext?
Odoo is a modular ERP suite with a free Community edition and a paid Enterprise edition. ERPNext is open-source ERP software that is free to use, covering accounting, stock, sales, purchasing and projects, among other things. With Odoo you may pay for the software itself; with ERPNext the cost sits in implementation, hosting and maintenance.
Functionally they overlap for the most part. Which modules fit your situation better is not a question an article answers. It follows from your processes, and a discovery maps those.
How does the licensing work?
Odoo Community is free; Odoo Enterprise is a paid subscription; we do not sell it. LogicX works independently of Odoo and does not resell Odoo licences. ERPNext has no paid edition: the software is open source and free to use, whatever the number of users.
What Odoo Enterprise costs per user, which apps sit in which plan and how the price changes with customisation is published on odoo.com and changes over time. The current prices are published on odoo.com. The same goes for the paid Frappe Cloud hosting plans for ERPNext. The plans are listed on frappecloud.com.
Where does it run?
Odoo runs on Odoo.sh, the platform run by Odoo itself, or on your own servers. ERPNext runs on Frappe Cloud or on your own servers. In both cases hosting is not the same as maintenance: hosting is the server, maintenance is the work around it, such as updates, backups, tests and support.
For the choice this matters in two ways. Your own servers need an IT team that keeps them up to date. The maker's platform takes that work off your hands, but ties you to that platform and its prices.
What does Odoo cost, and what does ERPNext cost?
Odoo pricing is made up of the licence (on Enterprise), implementation, customisation, hosting and maintenance. ERPNext cost is made up of implementation, customisation, hosting and maintenance, with no licence line. The difference on the licence line is real, but over several years it is rarely the largest item.
What drives the total is the same for both: scope, number of users, number of integrations, data migration and how much customisation you really need. That is why every project at LogicX starts with a paid discovery, after which you get a plan with a fixed price. A price quoted before that discovery is a guess.
- Licence: only on Odoo Enterprise, per user; the current price is on odoo.com.
- Implementation: configuring processes, permissions, reports, testing and training. For both, the largest item in year one.
- Customisation: every piece of your own code has to come through every upgrade. See the next section.
- Hosting: Odoo.sh or Frappe Cloud, or your own servers plus your IT team's hours.
- Maintenance: updates, backups, patches and support, every year again.
- Data migration and integrations: driven by your legacy system and your web shop, bank and carriers, not by the choice between Odoo and ERPNext.
How do upgrades and customisation work?
Odoo releases a new version every year, and custom modules have to be adapted to keep working. If you have a lot of customisation, you pay for that yearly. ERPNext also has versions that go out of support: version 14 has been out of support since 31 January 2026.
The lesson is the same for both: as much standard as possible, customisation only where it is really needed. How much customisation you need is therefore one of the biggest cost questions, and one of the first a discovery answers.
| Odoo | ERPNext | |
|---|---|---|
| Licence | Community free; Enterprise is a paid subscription | Open source, free to use |
| Hosting | Odoo.sh or your own servers | Frappe Cloud or your own servers |
| Cost drivers | Licence (Enterprise), implementation, customisation, hosting, maintenance | Implementation, customisation, hosting, maintenance |
| Upgrades and customisation | New version every year; custom modules must follow | Versions go out of support (v14 since 31 Jan 2026) |
| The question that decides it | Does a paid subscription pay for itself in the apps and platform you get with it? | Who runs and maintains it, and what does that cost per year? |
How big is the partner market?
Odoo has a large partner network. In the Netherlands alone there are 49 partners, 7 of them Gold (odoo.com, October 2026). That means plenty of choice of implementation partners.
LogicX is independent of both and sells no licences. If we could bid for the work ourselves, we say so up front.
How do you choose? The questions for a paid discovery
You do not choose on the strength of this article, but on the answers to a few questions about your own organisation. These are the questions a paid discovery of usually 1 to 3 weeks answers, followed by a plan and a fixed price:
- 1. How much of your process fits each system's standard, and where do you really need customisation?
- 2. How many users do you have now and in three years, and what does that mean for a per-user licence against no licence?
- 3. Who will run the system: your own IT, the maker's platform or an external party?
- 4. Which integrations must work on day one: web shop, bank, accounting, carriers, e-invoicing?
- 5. What has to come across from your legacy system, and what state is that data in?
- 6. How much local support do you want to be able to buy, and from whom?
- 7. What happens every year at a new version, and who pays for it?
